Diesel fuel has a bad environmental reputation, but the “dirtier” gas
may be better for the Earth than unleaded gasoline, at least on some
measures.
In a new study that focused on a type of fine-particle air-pollution
called secondary organic aerosols, researchers found that gasoline
vehicles contribute at least 80 percent of SOAs to the environment.
SOAs, form out of molecules in both diesel and gasoline exhaust, usually
make up between 40 and 60 percent of aerosol particles in city air, and
fine-particle has been linked to heart, respiratory and other ills in
people.
