FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT TO EAT

The USDA estimates that as much as 15 percent of U.S. households are food insecure, meaning they don’t fully know where their next meal may be coming from. Add to that a recent study from the World Bank that found somewhere between one-fourth and one-third of all food produced globally for human consumption is wasted — one of the biggest obstacles to conquering poverty.

Those are the sorts of issues local activists will be gathering to focus on for a two-day summit on food justice in Boulder this weekend.

The Forward Food Summit will be going down on Saturday, April 5 and Sunday, April 6 at Impact Hub Boulder.

“The Summit is open to the public, and costs $15 to attend both days. It will include talks, breakout sessions, field trips and a chance for folks to discuss how to address gaps in our local food systems,” Mary Rochelle of Fresh Ideas Group told BW.

THE PROTEIN BAR OPENS

Hey there health nuts, are you looking for a new place to go health nuts? Well you’re in luck. The Protein Bar, a new rapid-service restaurant focused on the good stuff, has opened in Boulder’s 29th Street Mall.

“Our focus is on serving healthy, flavorful food in a hip, trendy environment quickly and efficiently so you can get back to your day,” says The Protein Bar’s website.

The menu is big on wraps and bowls, but subs quinoa for rice because everyone knows that soft vowels have less calories. Oh Protein Bar, you wily devils! There are also a selection of juices, blended drinks, chilis and breakfast items including yogurt bowls and egg-white scrambles. Many items on the menu are or can be made vegetarian or vegan.

The chain is also working the bejeezus out of the Jared from Subway angle, with customer testimonials on its website out the gluten-free wazoo.

“I have been eating Protein Bar for a little over two months now, and it has not only incredibly changed my lifestyle and confi dence, but I have lost 15 pounds,” says Ashley from Chicago, who is probably a real person with a last name and not just a PR hack’s pseudonym.

The Boulder storefront is the first Colorado location for the Chicago-based chain, but two Denver locations have already been announced.

EAT BURRITOS FOR A GOOD CAUSE

If you prefer your burritos to be a bit less healthy and a lot more charitable, then skip The Protein Bar and head to Illegal Pete’s which will be donating a portion of proceeds during April to help children with autism.

“Illegal Pete’s will be donating $1 to The Joshua School every time a customer smothers their burrito,” reads a press release.

The Joshua School is one of only a handful of schools in Colorado that is designed for kids with autism, a disorder which is estimated to affect 1 in 169 births in Colorado.

Illegal Pete himself will also offer customers that like their burritos unsmothered the opportunity to give a dollar anyhow, but in exchange for a signed leaf to be hung on the wall instead of a ladleful of spicy heaven.
