Author Talk: Joanne Tubbs Kelly—‘Walking Him Home’

Alan and Joanne marry in midlife and live a happily-ever-after existence until, at 69, Alan is diagnosed with a rare, fatal, neurodegenerative illness. As he becomes increasingly disabled and dependent on others, and decreasingly able to find joy in life, he decides he wants to end his suffering using Colorado’s Medical Aid in Dying law. Walking Him Home is Joanne Tubbs Kelly’s tale of coming to terms with her kind, funny husband’s illness; of learning to navigate caregiving and the pitfalls of our medical system; and of choosing to help her husband in his quest to die with dignity. (Kelly will also speak at Tattered Cover Bookstore, 8885 Westminster Blvd., on Aug. 18.
Selfie Night at Longmont Public Media

Longmont Public Media is gathering artists from all over the state for a one night only selfie museum. Attendees pose as part of the exhibit and mount their cell phones to take pictures of themselves inside the exhibit. Exhibits will include hanging tapestries, psychedelic landscapes, and a photography project promoting positive self esteem in teenagers. Tripods with cell phone mounts will be posted in front of each exhibit. Outside the event, attendees can prepare for their selfies with styling vendors and face painting. Big Belly Brothers Barbecue food truck will be on hand for snacks between selfies. Selfie Night is part of a series of events called Thursday Night Live at Longmont Public Media, featuring movie trivia nights, live concerts and more.

The Boulder County Fair returns with many of the fun events and activities from fairs past, like live entertainment in the Fair Garden, Kids Corral and Petting Zoo, plus your favorite fair foods and 4-H animal projects. The Dairy Bar will be open for business and organizers are planning a live, in-person junior livestock sale.

FU Smash the Patriarchy: A Fundraiser for Reproductive Rights

As we work together to culturally smash the patriarchy, take your rage out physically right now while raising money for Colorado-based work to promote reproductive rights. Take a sledgehammer to a gutted-out Prius, and smash patriarchal piñatas filled with contraceptives. Throw plates that will be repurposed into mosaics. Enjoy all this, plus cocktails by DV8 and food by Fancy AF, and an incredible line-up of live music and performance, including drag, circus, DJs, and an unnameable, local, 34-member band that engulfs the audience in an electric bog of music, ephemera, and spectacle. Proceeds go to Cobalt, a Colorado nonprofit that advances reproductive rights, and COLOR Latino, the Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive Rights.

2022 marks Boulder Community Health’s 100th anniversary. This fall, the Museum of Boulder is celebrating the contributions BCH has made to the community with an exhibit highlighting the organization’s history, partnerships, and innovations. Explore 100 years of history, from medical procedures in the 1920s to the pandemic response, and beyond to the future of BCH. Light refreshments and snacks will be served.
Neptune Mountaineering presents Henna Taylor: Adventure Storytelling In Reel Time

At this event, filmmaker Henna Taylor will show two of her short documentaries, Speak To Me Softly and then A Thousand Ways To Kiss The Ground. These films are available to view online for free and Taylor will follow each film with a Q&A. At the end, she’ll show the trailer for An Accidental Life, her first feature-length film, and talk about future projects.
