UPDATE: Film critic Roger Ebert has passed away amid a years-long cancer battle, the Chicago Sun-Times announced.
Ebert had previously announced he would reduce his output and would write only “selected reviews” after learning that his cancer had returned.
Ebert, known for his movie review program Siskel and Ebert, followed by Ebert and Roeper after the death of Gene Siskel, had maintained a frantic writing schedule for years, despite health scares. Last year, Ebert wrote 306 movie reviews as well as blog posts on other topics, he said.
Ebert did not disclose in the blog post, linked below, what type of cancer he had. He did say he was being treated with radiation. Ebert had intended to continue a number of activities, like his yearly film festival in Urbana-Champaign, Ill., despite the health issue.
