La Ofrenda de los Muertos Celebration
All around Longmont, Day of the Dead celebrations abound. The Longmont Museum is putting up a Day of the Dead exhibit to celebrate its 13th year in existence, and members of the community are invited to come and build an altar themselves to honor their loved ones. There’s also a re-creation of a cemetery, decorated for Day of the Dead, and murals painted by Longmont’s 201 Main Tattoo Parlor. The Muse Gallery will display artist Tony Ortega’s Day of the Dead illustrations as well as the papier mache and embroidery of folk artist Rita Flores de Wallace. On Monday, Oct. 28, the Longmont Library (409 4th Ave., Longmont) will host a celebration with puppet shows, dancers, face painting and food. Through Nov. 2, the Rabid Rabits Galeria offers its Sacred Spaces exhibition, in which artists Kelly Moore, Anita Jantz, Colleen Horner, Karen Divine and Eileen Starnes answer the question, “What does the concept ‘sacred spaces’ mean to you?” The resulting work is all themed around Dia de los Muertos.
Monster Mash Adult Costume Ball
Leave the kids at home for this one. The Longmont Elks Lodge is hosting an adults-only costume ball at the group’s lodge on 306 Coffman St. in Longmont. The affair is a benefit for the OUR Center food pantry, and in addition to the $10 entry fee, if you bring canned food you will receive entry into a raffle. There will be live music, a cash bar, food and concessions. Oh, and don’t skimp on the costume: A total of $800 in prizes are available for those dressed up well, including $100 for the sexiest costume and $100 for the most disgusting one.
‘Macbeth’ at CU
William Shakespeare’s Macbeth has all the elements for a good Halloween play — witches, ghosts, cold-blooded murder. The students at the University of Colorado Boulder are putting this play on, and director Hadley Kamminga-Peck, a grad student in the Theatre and Dance program, promises eerie projections and other special effects designed to amp up the creepiness factor. And she says it will be a little sexy, too. “We’ll pull out the witches as the primary force operating on Macbeth and his lady,” Kamminga-Peck said in a press release. “At a time of the year when the veil is thin and mists obscure more than just trees, they can no longer be sure what it is that drives them into their murderous crimes — or what may await them on the other side.”
Exotica Erotica Ball
The name of this event might put a smile in the minds of some Boulderites, bringing back memories of the Exotic Erotic ball, a once-popular fundraiser put on by the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art each year. In recent years, the event had somewhat petered out, but now new organizers are bringing it back to life. Steve Wallis is teaming up with Burlesque Colorado to offer the Exotica Erotica Ball at Shine on Friday, Oct. 25, at 9 p.m. Tickets are $20. Costumes required; risqué attire (for all genders) is strongly encouraged.
Ghost Talk Ghost Walk
Take a trip through architecturally interesting, ghost-ridden homes in Boulder’s historic North Mapleton neighborhood, on Maxwell Avenue. Travel at your own pace from home to home, where tour guides and psychics await to inform and spook you. Guides will dress up as historical figures, and refreshments will be offered. The event is a benefit for Historic Boulder and takes place on Saturday, Oct. 26, and Sunday, Oct. 27, at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for members, $17 for non-members and $8 for children.
