Runners over 50 and runners who push themselves too hard aren’t helping their health, according to a study in the British journal Heart.
As Boulder Weekly has reported previously, researcher and study author James O’Keefe has warned against over-extending the heart’s abilities, saying it could take years off of runners’ lives.
In the study, over 50,000 runners and non-runners were examined. Runners who didn’t push too hard — defined as 20 miles per week or more — did enjoy longer life expectancy. Runners who routinely ran past that mark saw their life expectancy drop.
