The American Academy of Neurology has released new guidelines for parents and coaches of all types of athletes, including a recommendation to remove athletes from play if concussions are ever suspected.
The group’s recommendations replace 15-year-old guidelines which recommended “grading” the severity of a concussion and determining when a player should return to action. The new guidelines emphasize individual treatment instead of a blanket method.
The new recommendations aren’t any great revelation, one concussion expert says, but they do accurately state that suffering a second concussion before allowing the first to heal can cause much worse effects.
