President Obama has money edge…for now

The Republican primary has become a massive money vacuum, while
giving President Barack Obama time to stockpile a huge war chest.

But Obama’s advantage at the moment doesn’t mean the eventual Republican nominee will be at a major financial disadvantage.

Rather, campaign reports released Tuesday and other
indicators suggest that Republicans will be in better shape than
expected headed into the general election — explaining why the Obama
camp, with more than $94.2 million in the bank among its various
committees, is nonetheless nervous about their likely opponent, Mitt
Romney, who has just $7.3 million.

Add up the evidence: Republican big-money outside groups have vastly
outperformed their Democratic counterparts. Obama’s own fundraising has
slowed from the historic pace he set in 2008. And he is increasingly courting big donors – playing a game at which the GOP has had the upper hand.
