The Significance of Samurai Culture, 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, Paleontology Hall at CU, 303-492-6892.
Sure, the University of Colorado Boulder has a collection of samurai weapons, but they’re for “educational purposes.”
Since 1977, more than 850 Asian artifacts have been donated to the CU Museum of Natural History. At one time, this rich collection sparked interest in building an Asian history museum on the CU campus, but due to a lack of space and funding, it never came to fruition. Instead, these artifacts have allowed for numerous exhibitions on Asian topics at the Natural History Museum on campus. The current exhibition features samurai relics, focusing on “Japanese blades.”
Dr. Robert Pontsioen of the Smithsonian Institution and University of Aberdeen will be lecturing on the history and significance of samurai culture at the Paleontology Hall.
