Residents asked to show support for homeless

Boulder residents are being asked to show their support of the city’s homeless population at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting.

The Carriage House and the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center (RMPJC) have teamed up in an effort to stop the practice of arresting homeless people who sleep outside on public land. The organizations are asking that residents sign up to speak to the issue at the public comment section of Tuesday’s council meeting.

“This is a human rights issue,” said Betty Ball, who manages the RMPJC office. “People who are homeless should not be criminalized. It’s a human right to be able to sleep.

“If places are not provided for people to sleep, they’ve got to be able to sleep somewhere, and public lands are the logical place for that to happen. We need to make some kind of accommodation, we need to make some kind of real plan that’s going to provide for people’s needs in an adequate way.”

The public comment section runs from 6-7 p.m. during the meeting. Those interested in signing up to speak are asked to meet in front of the Municipal Building, west of the intersection of Canyon Boulevard and Broadway Street, between 4 and 6 p.m.
