After a Feb. 22, 2011 earthquake destroyed the large Gothic cathedral in Christchurch, New Zealand, the architectural loss was significant. But, more practically, the congregation needed somewhere to worship.Â
Japanese-born architect Shigeru Ban wanted to solve both problems. And his proposal, based on his experience in “emergency architecture,” is both unusual, practical and beautiful.
Ban’s new cathedral will be build from cardboard tubes two feet in diameter, waterproofed and treated with flame-retardant chemicals.
The high A-frame structure, which will feature stained-glass-like windows above the congregation, can be constructed quickly. Ban expects the construction to be completed by April.
