Groundbreaking ceremony set for new Salina fire station

A groundbreaking ceremony for the new fire station in Salina is taking place at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, June 21.

The Salina Fire House, a fire engine, other rescue equipment and all records were destroyed by the Fourmile Canyon Fire in September 2010.

“The rebuilding of the fire station is significant because the Fourmile Fire District is a 22-square-mile district, and the people in the homes and the businesses within this district rely on all of the resources, so we really need this fire station rebuilt,” says Karen Walker-Bannon, Fourmile Fire District public information officer.

Fourmile Fire Protection District Chief Brett Gibson estimates that it will cost between $160,000 and $185,000 to rebuild the fire station and about $500,000 to replace the fire engine and equipment.

Since the insurance only covered a portion of the losses, on July 15, The Boulder Hotel & Motel Association and the Millennium Harvest House Hotel are holding a silent auction for the Fourmile Fire Protection District. The event is being held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Millennium Harvest House Gardens and will also feature live music by Soul School.

Community members will have the opportunity to bid on everything from weekend getaways to mountain destinations to gift certificates to local restaurants, says Walker-Bannon. Proceeds from the benefit, which is being held during the Millennium Harvest House’s Friday Afternoon Club, will go toward rebuilding the fire station and replacing the fire engine that was lost in the Fourmile Fire.
