Floods likely to worsen in next century

Human development shares blame with climate change

New research published in the journal, Nature,  investigates the risks of flooding in the coming decades and the outlook is grim.

Flood damage in Europe is expected to quadruple by 2050 with two thirds of the damage coming not at the hands of climate change, but human development.

From the BBC…

“The scientists believe that the continent’s annual flood costs may be 23.5bn euros by the middle of the century.”

This research differs from previous research in that it looks at the interconnectedness of European countries instead of analyzing them independently of one another.

More locally, researchers in Colorado recently said that last year’s floods were big, but that they weren’t “the big one,” and they likely won’t reach the economic damage of the Cherry Creek Flood in 1965, and fell far short of the human cost of previous floods in 1976 and 1921 that killed 144 and 78, compared to last years’ death toll of 10.
