Clean air rally planned

Groups and individuals concerned about safeguarding the climate, clean air and social justice are holding rallies in Boulder and Denver this weekend to draw attention to the recent attacks in Congress against the Clean Air Act, the Environmental Protection Agency and the EPA’s authority to regulate carbon pollution.

The Boulder rally is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, at the corner of Canyon Boulevard and Broadway. Scheduled speakers include Congressman Jared Polis, Boulder Mayor Susan Osborne, NCAR biogeochemist Beth Holland, Angie Layton of Physicians for Social Responsibility, Unity of Boulder Minister Jack Groverland, CU student leader Scot Wooley and Clean Energy Action Founder Leslie Glustrom.

The Denver event will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 27, on the west steps of the state Capitol. Similar events are happening this week nationwide.

Organizers say overly industry-friendly senators and representatives are trying to strip the EPA of authority to set standards for acceptable amounts of carbon pollution from big emitters like coal plants and oil refineries. They are calling on leaders to protect this authority and legislation.

Those interested in participating can visit http://local.1Sky.org and enter their ZIP code for more information and to RSVP.  Participants are encouraged to wear green to show support for clean, renewable energy.

Co-sponsors of the rally include 1Sky, 350.org, Boulder County Audubon, Center for Biological Diversity, Clean Energy Action, Colorado Interfaith Power and Light, Earth Guardians, Greenlands — Neighbors for Climate Action in Newlands, Greenpeace, League of Women Voters of Boulder County, Mothers Acting Up, National Tribal Environmental Council, The Native American Rights Fund, New Era Colorado, Physicians for Social Responsibility, PLAN-Boulder County, Protect Our Winters, Rocky Mountain Center for Peace and Justice, Sierra Club, Unity Church of Boulder and the Unitarian Universalists Church of Boulder Green Sanctuary Team.
