Broadband reaches warp speed in British test

A joint test in London clocks fastest broadband speed ever measured

The BCC is reporting that the
“fastest ever” broadband speeds have been achieve in a test in London.

French telecommunications equipment company Alcatel-Lucent
and British telecommunications provider BT transferred data at 1.4 terabits per
second on a 255-mile link between BT’s central London tower
and a sit in Ipswich. For perspective, that’s enough speed to download 44
high-definition movies at once (and really, who doesn’t need 44 HD movies at
once?).

But it’s Internet service providers who will ultimately get
the most bang for their buck, increasing their capacity for data transfer by
using existing broadband infrastructure, namely fiber cable technology.

From the article:

“Kevin Drury, optical marketing
leader at Alcatel-Lucent, likened the development to reducing space between
lanes on a busy motorway, enabling more lanes of traffic to flow through the
same area.”

However, just like squeezing more cars on the road heightens
the chance for accidents, cramming more data into a fiber line creates more
potential for interference and error.

But Alcatel-Lucent and BT claim their test exhibited
“stable, error-free operation.”
