A group of local activists has organized a bike ride to
the Valmont Coal Plant Saturday to plant sunflowers in the name of healthy
energy choices.
The event, “Our Power, Our Future, Our Choice: A Bike Ride
and Sunflower Planting for Clean Energy” will begin at 10 a.m. at the Boulder
Band Shell at Broadway and Canyon. Riders will leave at 10:30, arriving at the
coal plant at noon. Participants will then enjoy live music, plant sunflowers
and create art as a message against the pollution of coal-powered energy
produced there.
Between 150 and 200 riders are expected.
Organizers of the event include Earth Guardians, Power
Past Coal and iMatter Colorado.
City Council is expected to vote Tuesday on whether to place
a measure on the November ballot regarding municipalization of the city’s light
and power utilities.
