ISLAMABAD — A U.S. unmanned drone aircraft Wednesday
targeted a compound in Pakistan’s northwest tribal region along the
Afghan border, killing 20 suspected militants, intelligence officials
said.

The pre-dawn strike took place near Miransha, the
main town in North Waziristan, one of the tribal districts used as
hideouts by al-QaIda and Taliban rebels.

“Locals have pulled 20 bodies from the debris of the
house that was demolished by the drone strike,” an intelligence official
who requested anonymity said.

Another intelligence official who also spoke on
condition of anonymity said that “all the killed were associated with
the Haqqani group.”

The militant group led by Jalaluddin Haqqani carries
out attacks against NATO and Afghan forces across the border from their
bases in North Waziristan.
