On March 31, 2019, Colorado lost one of its great champions of cinema: Brit Withey. Withey, who died in a one-car crash, was the artistic director of the Denver Film Festival, and his tastes leaned toward the dark and daring. If you entered the evening’s showing and saw Withey waiting in the wings to introduce the movie, you knew you were in for an adventure. He will be missed, and this year’s Denver Film Festival (Oct. 31-Nov. 10), will pay tribute to Withey on Wednesday, Oct. 30, with three of his favorite films at the Sie Film Center: American Movie, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Frownland. A fitting lineup for the man who kept the flame alive for documentaries, independents and Westerns.
