LOS ANGELES — Actor-director Mel Gibson will pay the
mother of his toddler daughter $750,000 under a settlement disclosed
Wednesday that allows her and the child to remain in their mansion in
the San Fernando Valley community of Sherman Oaks.
Oksana
Grigorieva will be paid in three installments, the final one coming in
January 2016 under a deal that will allow her to stay in the home she
shares with their daughter, Lucia.
When Lucia
reaches the age of 18, the home must be sold and the proceeds placed in a
trust for her, said Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Peter D.
Lichtman.
Gibson and Grigorieva, a Russian musician, will have joint legal custody.
Last summer, Grigorieva agreed to a settlement worth $16 million but later said she consented under duress.
That
deal came after lawyers for Grigorieva demanded $20 million and
revealed she had secretly recorded vulgar, racist rants made by Gibson
during their time together.
The episode turned
into one of Hollywood’s ugliest splits with the tapes being posted
online, derailing Gibson’s comeback attempt after a 2006 drunken driving
arrest during which he spewed anti-Semitic insults.
A
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department investigation into claims of
extortion against the girlfriend did not result in charges. Gibson
pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor battery charge involving Grigorieva.
The new agreement bars Gibson and Grigorieva from writing books about their relationship.
Gibson spoke briefly in court and thanked the judge for bringing the case to a “reasonable conclusion.”
