HBO, ‘Glee’ dominate Emmy nominations

LOS ANGELES — It was a “Glee”-ful morning.

The Fox freshman phenomenon about a high school glee
club scored 19 Emmy nominations Thursday morning — the most of any
series — including best comedy series and acting nods for Lea Michele, Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch and Chris Colfer.

But it was HBO that dominated the morning. The pay
channel pulled in 101 nominations, two more than last year’s haul.
Leading the way was ambitious 10-part World War II miniseries “The
Pacific” — produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks — with 24 of those nominations.

There’s also no sign that AMC’s period drama “Mad
Men” is getting old. The best dramatic series winner for the last two
years earned 17 nominations, including best drama series and acting
nominations for Jon Hamm and January Jones, as well as writing and directing.

And somewhere, Conan O’Brien was
cackling: The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences jumped on the
Team Coco bandwagon, nominating the short-lived “The Tonight Show With
Conan O’Brien” in the category of best comedy and variety series,
snubbing Jay Leno.

Other best-comedy nominations went to Emmy fave “30
Rock,” as well as “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” newcomer “Modern Family, “The
Office” and the darkly funny “Nurse Jackie.”

On a more serious note, there was also a fond farewell to ABC
drama series “Lost.” It had a particularly strong showing, earning
nominations in several categories, including best dramatic series and a
best-actor nod for Matthew Fox.

Also nominated in the dramatic category were “Breaking Bad,” “Dexter,” “Lost,” “Mad Men” and “True Blood.”

The 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards will air live coast to coast on Aug. 29 on NBC at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles.
