There is nothing like holiday treats to create a festive mood in any home or office this time of year. Something about colorful cookies, fudge and other confectionary items truly make the holiday spirit more prominent. While it’s fun to bake at home if you have the time and ingredients, sometimes it’s not always possible amid holiday shopping, family visits and weekends on the Colorado slopes. Numerous local bakeries and confectionaries are gearing up with the sweetest treats for your enjoyment this holiday season.
Boulder Baked on Broadway is more than a latenight destination after an outing on Pearl Street.
This bakery offers homemade desserts including cakes, cupcakes, pie and cookies made from family recipes. Known for its late-night deliveries, the bakery is open from 4 p.m. until midnight Sunday through Wednesday and until 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday if you’re craving something sweet long after your family meal is done.
Offering vegan and gluten-free options, Boulder Baked fits most dietary needs deliciously. Their baked specialties include the fruit pizza, a monster sugar cookie with icing and fresh fruit, pumpkin cheesecake, vegan piña colada cake and dozens of cookies baked-to-order. The bakery even delivers a quart of milk when you order confectionary items to your home or office.
Spruce Confections on West Pearl Street has been a neighborhood novelty for more than 17 years. A European-inspired café, owner David Cohen offers croissants, bread, scones and more than 60 different pastries at his downtown location and its sister café on north Broadway. Entirely wind-powered, Spruce Confections recycles or composts 80 percent of its waste and buys its ingredients from organic, local sources.
Kim and Jake’s Cakes in the Table Mesa Shopping Center has created a special holiday menu specifically for the approaching winter holidays. The bakery offers a café brulot cake, a luscious combination of coffee, chocolate, orange zest, brandy, cinnamon, cloves and whipping cream, as well as pumpkin cake with cream cheese icing and toasted pecans. Two other holiday specialties include a peppermint patty cake and a package cake, decorated like holiday gift package.
Their eggnog pie with brandy, rum and spice egg custard would certainly be worth tasting for eggnog-lovers, and their cranberry orange white chocolate pie sounds like a winning combination, too. Holiday cakes vary in price, but holiday pies are $19 each.
Tee & Cakes in downtown Boulder has been locally owned and operated since 2007 and offers a vast variety of cupcakes, cakes, coffee and pastries. All baking and decorating is done in their shop and the bakery will deliver to the Boulder area for a small additional fee. Perhaps not holiday-appropriate, but interesting nonetheless, Tee & Cakes offers cupcake flavors like chocolate bacon, strawberry milkshake, Coca-Cola and salted caramel.
Custom cakes with any flavor, size and inscription are made to order and can have tie-dye designs, 3-D shapes, tiered levels or anything else you might need for your holiday festivities. At Tee & Cakes, cake inscription and designs have zero limitations.
