Don’t be fooled by the name, Journeys Backyard Barbeque
isn’t your average block party.
A touring playground for the MTV generation, Journeys
Backyard Barbeque will be serving up live music and action sports in a
high-energy setting.
Media contact Beth Pursley says the barbecue reference
relates to the sizzling hot sports action that fans can expect.
“It’s all kind of a play on the summer backyard barbecue,”
Pursley says.
High-profile X-games athletes and local musicians will be
taking over the south outer parking lot outside the Flatirons Mall in
Broomfield on Sunday, June 4. This free event will feature live music from
popular and up-and-coming local acts alongside notable figures in the
skateboarding and BMX industry.
The touring event kicked off in San Antonio at the beginning
of May and will be wrapping up in Broomfield this weekend with special
appearances from stars in music, action sports and entertainment.
Rob Dyrdek has become a popular figure in entertainment with
his MTV shows about his kooky lifestyle, but before “Rob & Big” and
“Fantasy Factory” became summer afternoon staples, he was a record-breaking,
internationally renowned skateboarder.
Dyrdek will be in good company at the Denver stop of the
Journeys tour. Also on the DC sponsored team is Danny Way, who became famous
after jumping from a helicopter into a vert ramp over the Great Wall of China
on a skateboard.
Athletes at the event who prefer bikes to decks include
Corey Bohan, who is considered to be the best dirt BMX rider in the world and
Allan Cooke, credited as an innovative rider on the Megaramp.
These action sports athletes will be demonstrating their
talents in the tour’s 60,000 square foot venue of jumps and ramps.
Patrons can expect a free act at 6 p.m. by headliner The Dirty Heads, as well as a
competition from local unsigned artists in “Converse Battle of the Bands.”
The competing bands include the ambient and catchy My Body Sings Electric, Regret Night, a band that’s opened for
talents like the Smashing Pumpkins
and past mainstream success, Red Jumpsuit
Apparatus. Alternative band Vices I
Admire got their start in 2002 at Colorado State University and will be
participating in the battle as well.
For visitors who like to doodle for a cause, there will be a
Converse-sponsored “Punk Your Chucks” tent where fans can use Sharpies to
design their own pair of Converse Chuck Taylor high-tops. At each event a shoe
design will win and be entered into a contest to be produced by Converse and
sold to retailers.
The 250 pairs of shoes that don’t win will be donated to
local nonprofit and Journeys partner, A Precious Child. The official nonprofit
partner of the tour is the Keep A Breast Foundation, who has a booth at the
tour to help young people be aware of breast cancer and how to prevent it.
